The extended provision is for pupils who will benefit from a nurturing-approach but need longer than a term to address ingrained maladaptive behaviour and reengage with education. Pupils in this pathway may return to their original school but most will be waiting for a new school placement.
The curriculum is aimed at addressing barriers to learning and improving social skills but with a greater focus on building character and helping students to become more robust. Pupils are also offered lessons in English, Maths and ICT, as well as more practical subjects such as Music, Art and PE. In addition, pupils spend time doing enrichment activities which promote collaborative working, social cohesion and resilience. Meal times or break times are included but are used as learning opportunities in how to behave during unstructured times in school.
When it is appropriate pupils are reintroduced into a school setting and are fully supported by DESC staff initially. Reintegration occurs at a pace which is appropriate for the individual student.
